mobile’s SIM card on the ground; I picked it up
and put it in my mobile in case someone called the
martyr!’
Mustafa hung up uttering no single word.
Praying, my mother looked Mustafa in the eye
and said, ‘Your brother died?’ He did not answer
her. She immediately wore her frock and went out
alone heading to Kamal Udwan Hospital. Mustafa
followed her.
My father was still at home; sleeping. Our
voices were too loud for him not to wake up. He
asked about mom. I told him she has just left and told
him about Mustafa’s call. My father disappeared.
He followed them there.
There, he was already gone. Father? He
didn’t recognize him. Mother? The only thing she
said in a sad, shaky voice, ‘My son! To Allah we
belong, and to him we shall return. I love you.’
And we lost him. We lost him forever. God help my
parents and grant them patience. Amen.

On the first day of the aggression on the
Gaza Strip, my son, Mohammed, went out to work
early. After leader Abu Muhammad Al-Jabari was
targeted, my husband called my son and asked him
to directly come back home. He told him that he
was on his way, but went to buy gasoline for the
electricity generator, because electricity was cut
off, and he told my husband he was with his friend,
Essam Abu Al-Meza riding a motorcycle.
